Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) Medications
The names and images of weight loss drugs have flooded social media feeds and commercial breaks. Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro are just some of the names you may see circulating through media. Journalists for well-known outlets publish articles about the efficacy, rising costs and availability of GLP-1s. What are Glucagon-Like Peptide-1s? How can you determine if you could benefit from the use of a GLP-1? We want to remove the confusion and bring clarity to the world of weight loss medication.
What is a GLP-1 medication?
Weight-loss medications have historically been referred to as too good to be true or miracle pills sold to consumers by unqualified telemarketers. However, prescription weight-loss drugs can be incredibly helpful for many people. Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) is not the name of a medication, but the name of a gut hormone found in your body. This hormone regulates appetite and is released when you are eating to send a signal when you are full. Most weight-loss medications that are referred to as GLP-1s use semaglutide, a synthetic version of the GLP-1 hormone.
What does a GLP-1 medication do?
A GLP-1 is not a shortcut to weight loss. Semaglutide is a useful tool in a weight loss journey that can help a patient reach their goals. The medication can help you feel full faster and for a longer period. It slows down digestion of the food you eat and helps you stop eating when you are full.
Are there side effects to a GLP-1?
You may experience some uncomfortable side effects when you begin a GLP-1 medication. A couple of these side effects include diarrhea, nausea and bloating among others. These side effects are typically due to the slowing of your digestion. You should see the side effects subside with time, but should always speak to your provider if the side effects are unbearable or do not dissipate over time.
Can I take a GLP-1?
GLP-1 medications are not for everyone. Your provider will speak with you about your medical history and health goals. Once you have collaborated on a treatment plan, this may or may not include GLP-1s. Your weight loss journey will be unique to you. Losing weight does not look the same for every person. Feel free to ask your provider questions to learn more about different methods of weight loss. Your medical provider is committed to helping you reach a healthy weight as safely as possible. If your provider has prescribed you a GLP-1, it is because they believe you would respond well to the medication and that it would be helpful for you.
