What is a Neurologist?
A neurologist is a doctor that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions. Your neurologists treats conditions with non-surgical methods. If your neurologist feels that you need surgical treatment, you will be referred to an experienced surgeon. Some conditions, such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, may require more than one medical provider to help you find relief. Our team at UNC Neurology works closely with numerous specialty providers to achieve the best possible outcome.

- Consultations and Physical Exams: Your care team is committed to evaluating you thoroughly to reach an accurate diagnosis and create a personalized treatment plan.
- Care Coordination: Your treatment plan may include other specialist providers or rehabilitation providers. Our team will work closely with your providers to provide complete, clear care.
- Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX®) Injections: Though BOTOX® is most well-known in an aesthetician's office, it can be a useful tool in the treatment of migraines. This medication is FDA approved to treat chronic migraine, or 15 headache days a month.
- Electromyography / Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG): These tests help with diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders by measuring the electrical activity in your muscles and nerves.
- Electroencephalography (EEG): This test records electrical activity in different areas of your brain. It is effective in diagnosis of epilepsy and other disorders.
- Epidermal Nerve Fiber Density Testing: This skin biopsy allows your neurologist to evaluate you for small fiber neuropathy.
- Immunotherapy: If you struggle with neuroinflammatory conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, we offer immunotherapy as a treatment option.
- Infusion Therapy: This therapy is effective in the treatment neuromuscular diseases and headaches. Infusions deliver targeted medication to help manage chronic neurological disorders.
- Lumbar Punctures: This procedure is performed to diagnose spinal and neurological disorders. The lumbar puncture collects cerebrospinal fluid needed for an accurate diagnosis.
- Post-Acute Stroke Care: Our team provides care to patients after the acute stroke phase. The personalized treatment plan focuses on optimizing secondary prevention and ensuring appropriate support from physical and occupational therapy. We will work with physical medicine as well as rehabilitation teams to provide every tool needed for a smooth recovery.
