Recognition for Best Surgical Care
by Tim Palmer, member of the CMH SCIP Team
The Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) is a national initiative to reduce the incidence of surgical complications by 25 percent by 2010. Hospitals aim to reduce postsurgical conditions such as surgical site infections, blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks.
The North Carolina Center for Hospital Quality and Patient Safety spearheaded a SCIP Collaborative among North Carolina hospitals to improve performance in surgical care by developing reliable processes and sharing best practices among the participating hospitals. Participants represented more than 70 percent of the surgical volume in the state.
During the first year, Caldwell Memorial Hospital was recognized as one of the three most improved hospitals in the state in delivering best practice surgical care. In September 2008, a collaborative meeting was held in Chapel Hill to celebrate the success of the first year. Caldwell Memorial Hospital was also selected as one of three hospitals to make a presentation on its success to the group; CMH was also recognized as one of two highly reliable hospitals in cardiac beta blocker care for surgical patients.
SCIP is one of many ways that Caldwell Memorial Hospital provides you the quality health care you trust and the caring you deserve.
