Simple Backache or Back Problem?

Pain located centrally in the lower back should resolve after a few days of rest. Conservative treatments—applying cold compresses and heat or taking overthe- counter pain relievers—are often all that’s needed. But it’s important to know the signs of a more serious problem. You should see the doctor when you have:

  • Pain lasting longer than four weeks
  • Pain as the result of a fall or blow
  • Numbness, weakness, or a tingling sensation in the leg or foot
  • Pain radiating down the leg, a condition called sciatica
  • Sudden loss of bladder or bowel control
