Runny Nose? No Need to
Run to the Doc
If your little one has a runny nose, she probably doesn’t need a prescription for an
antibiotic. Most kids get better without antibiotics, according to a review of seven studies.
For every child who benefits from an antibiotic, there are six other children who do not.
In addition, most guidelines don’t recommend antibiotics as the first step in treating a
runny nose. These medicines can have side effects on a child’s digestive system. They also
promote antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
